September 10- September 30th Fred S. Haines Show in Meaford

Fred S. Haines could have been a member of the Group of Seven. He was born in Meaford in 1879. He went on to paint beautiful landscapes in oil and watercolour. He also created etchings, serigraphs, and woodblock prints. His work can be seen at the Meaford Hall Galleries, Meaford Museum and Georgian Bay Secondary School until September 30th, 2010. Show hours are 10 am to 4 pm daily.

Haines had impressive credentials after his name, P.O.S.A., P.R.C.A, C.P.E, C.S.P.W.C. He was principle at the Ontario College of Art from 1932 to 1951, amoung other positions that he held.

Haines was a close friend of Arthur Lismer and J.E.H.MacDonald and first cousin of Franklin Carmichael, but he had no interest in joining the Group of Seven.

2010 is the fiftieth year since his death in 1960. A group of Meaford area residents decided to honor him by putting on the exhibit. These volunteers should be applauded for their work. Haines had donated some paintings to the high school in Meaford and this forms a large part of the exhibit. I'm sure it wasn't easy to gather up the rest of the exhibit from private collections and galleries. Well done!

Haines use of colour is perfect, He depicts the depth of the painting in an amazing way. I was very impressed that after closely examining some of his paintings that they seem very simple, step a few feet back and they come to life. The man was a genius in both composition and execution.

Some of Haines works are for sale. This could be your opportunity to own one of his works of art.

Starting September 30th John A. Libby Fine Art in Toronto will have an exhibit of his work.
